Georges BRAQUE

1882-1963
Georges BRAQUE

Born in 1882, Braque was a French painter, sculptor and engraver who diedin Paris in 1963.

At first inspired by the Fauvists, then influenced by Henri Matisse, André Derain and Othon Friesz, Georges Braque brought a simplification to his paintings from 1906 onwards that is said to be at the origin of cubism.

Badly wounded during World War I, the painter abandoned geometric forms for still lifes in which the objects feature in recomposed planes.

The range of subjects treated by Braque (still lifes, landscapes, human figures) has not prevented his oeuvre from being remarkably coherent.
