René MAGRITTE

1898-1967
René MAGRITTE

Born in 1898, Magritte was a Belgian painter who died in 1967.

Schooled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels, drawn to cubism and Italian Futurism, René Magritte found his way when he discovered the work of Giorgio De Chirico and of Max Ernst.

In 1926 he joined the surrealist movement.

Magritte provoked viewers with his unusual works, associating or creating objects, characters or texts that were completely unrelated. His humour was caustic. The titles he gave to his works added to the disconcerting aspect of his oeuvre.

Death, anxiety and fear are recurrent themes in his work.
